This chapter reviews three classic peptide calciotropic hormones; parathyroid hormone, parathyroid-hormone-related protein, and calcitonin. Calcium metabolism is dependent upon dietary intake, efficient absorption within the intestinal tract, maintenance of normal blood ionized calcium concentrations, storage of calcium within the bone, and retention or excretion of calcium by the kidneys.
